Newsletter 2025 Term 2 Week 7
PRINCIPAL NEWS - Mr Peter Hughes
As I am away in Canberra at a series of principal meetings so this will be a short contribution to the newsletter by me.
Community Council
On Wednesday, 18th June, the next meeting of the Community Council will be taking place. It commences at 6pm in the staffroom and any interested parents are more than welcome to attend.
Athletics Carnival
Next Friday we have a considerable number of students representing St Mary’s at the Western Region Athletics Carnival, which we are hosting at Gus Smith Oval. We wish them the best of luck and pray for favourable weather.
The Community Council will again be running a canteen and any assistance on the day would be greatly appreciated. If you can help either let the school office know or simply turn up on the day.
School Uniforms
I again ask parents to ensure all clothing has their child’s name on them. Children turn up to school with many layers of clothing on and shed these as they run around during breaks and often leave them behind. It is hard to return it to the owner without a name. We have nearly new tops sitting in our lost property box. If they are there for a significant amount of time without being claimed they go to our used clothing pool. We don’t want a mountain of lost clothing, without names, clogging up the front office.
At the other end of the spectrum we still have students turning up on these very cold days in shorts and tee shirts on sports day or without jumpers or coats on other days. Please ensure that your child is dressed to cope with the cold weather especially when they first arrive at school.
AP NEWS - Mrs Katie Thompson
Morning drop-offs on Elizabeth St:
Please be aware of the safety issue in the mornings, if you drop off your children on the eastern side (Molloy Place side) of Elizabeth St. Children have been crossing Elizabeth St and not walking down to the Crossing. They then walk to Boothby St and cross there to come in the school’s front gate. Both these roads are extremely busy and drivers' attention is on the actual Pedestrian Crossing, potentially placing the children at great risk. Buses are turning from Elizabeth into Boothby St making this more unsafe. Children are opting for the faster option, without any consideration for the safety risk they are placing themselves in. Please check that your children are all crossing at the pedestrian crossing on Elizabeth St. Thank you for your support in this important matter.
Safe On Social - Kirra Pendergast:
Synthetic Relationships and Chatbots
Do your children have friendships online with AI-powered characters? Do you monitor the time and number that they engage with? Read on for some sound advice from Kirra Pendergast in guiding your children’s interactions online.
Apps like Character.ai and Linky are becoming more popular, letting users chat with AI-powered characters that simulate friendships or relationships. While these chatbots might seem fun and engaging, it’s important to understand the risks of forming synthetic relationships, interactions that feel real but are actually powered by artificial intelligence. Learning how to use these apps wisely helps protect your emotional well-being and privacy.

This will be the only meal available on Tuesday (recess orders will remain open).
Please order your meal through flexischools by 8:30 am Tuesday morning.
Vegetarian, Gluten free and Dairy free options will be available.
Thank you to the volunteers that came in to help for our first Hot Lunch Tuesday, Tacos and dining in the Hall with our friends was a success!
I would love to have some help to prep our meal on Monday and 4 people would be great to serve our baked pasta on Tuesday, even if you only have an hour on Tuesday you could come just from 10:30 – 11:30.
Fruit Break
Please note that we have fruit available in the canteen to order for fruit break through flexischools.
We are happy to provide fruit on the one off occasion for children that have none in their lunch box.
If you realize that you have no fruit to pack for fruit break and your child will be coming down to the canteen it would be great if they could bring a gold coin donation, to help us keep up our fruit supply.

HOT LUNCH TUESDAY - TACO TUESDAY
On Tuesday's we have introduced a 'Hot Lunch' Deal. The first was Taco Tuesday. A popular choice with the children. They got to build their own tacos with a choice of toppings and then enjoyed eating them together in the hall cafeteria style.
WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING IN OUR CLASSROOMS
Last week the Kindergarten children investigated what materials that would be suitable
to carry a drink bottle.
They were given a variety of materials to use to design and then make their carry bag.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the task and the lesson time had to be extended several
times as they were thoroughly enjoying experimenting and designing.
Here are the photo results of our drink bottle carrier designs.
